Presentations: 2 Minute Training #8: Don’t Use Powerpoint
To many business people, and many presenters, Powerpoint is the end-all, be-all of the presentation world. So why does Tyler Dockery advise most business people not to use Powerpoint, and in fact, never to use Powerpoint for professional presentations?
Powerpoint is an accessible program, and many people use it without thinking. After all, its sitting right there on their computer.
Powerpoint is really for informal presentations, because it has a lot of built-in functions, and those functions make us feel as though the presentation exists, and our job is simply to deliver it. This couldn’t be farther from the truth. In fact, if you are simply delivering the presentation, you are really in danger of getting fired— because anyone can simply deliver a presentation.
First and foremost, Powerpoint is merely a note-taking device, and should only be a visual cue for the presenter. However, many presenters are living in the 80’s and still read every line that exists on the screen. This is such a horrible faux pas, that I will be creating a 2 minute Presentation training topic on it. If you are doing this, stop.
Secondly, Powerpoint is not a color-safe presentation device. What may look good in your office may not necessarily look good in a client’s presentation room. It may look different on their computer, and it may look different on YOUR computer and your projector. Its great to see something on your screen that looks good, but when the colors are washed out enough to be non-existent at the presentation, people will be shaking their heads.
Fonts can be an issue. Yes, really. Nothing like all your type turning into courier to show just how unprepared you really are.
It may not be there. Expecting to use a computer in the presentation room? You better be on your knees praying that the thing has everything that you need. Otherwise you’re SOL.
Powerpoint has some big faults. Don’t get caught up using it, just because everyone else does. Bring your materials in PDF format, and use your own materials. Save yourself some time and effort. Avoid using powerpoint!
