Presentations: 2 Minute Training #3: Clean Up When Your Presentation is Over

The presentation is over. All the questions were answered satisfactorily, and all the materials you brought are ready to go home. So you shake hands, exit out to your vehicle, and start on your way home, right?

WRONG. Everybody hates a guest that comes, makes a mess, and then leaves. Even if the guest is important, people hate that.

Sure, shake hands with the body you presented to, thanking them each in turn, and let them know you have a little tidying to do before you go. Then guess what?

Clean up after yourself. Be remembered as the presenter who cleaned up after everything was done. Tidy the room, put the chairs back nicely and cleanly for each person who attended the meeting. Stack the extra chairs, and move them out of the way, and to the corner near the entrance door, so that they cannot be seen as clutter when entering the room. Fold up any easels that were left in the room when you entered, and place them behind the stacked chairs (wherever they are) or in some out-of-the-way place.

If there are crumbs and napkins, sweep the crumbs into the napkins with any discarded food, and put the whole thing in the trashcan. More the trashcan over to the main presentation space. Give any uneaten food to a secretary, or move it to a breakroom where it can be enjoyed by the company at large.

When all is said and done, make sure to take an extra sweep of the area and discard any trash.

POINT OF INTEREST:
If you are the only person that is presenting, your professional, clean exit will leave the company with a warm, fuzzy feeling. If, on the other hand, you aren’t the only one presenting that day, the burden will be on the next presenter to ready the room. They will enter into an empty room ready to begin, but if they haven’t prepared properly, they will have to set up easels, chairs, presentation materials as needed, and they may begin late. This will make any competitor look shabby and unprepared. At the very least, they will have to move a full trashcan.

Clean up after yourself, and be remembered. Try to do your best to make their working environment as nice as you can when you are finished, and perhaps you’ll be seen for the clean and professional organization or individual you are.
