Networking: 2 Minute Training #7: Know Your Intro, But Tell A Story
Networking functions are a great opportunity for you to increase the exposure of your business. You stand up in front of a crowd of interested individuals, and talk about your business, what makes your products or services the very best in your industry, and generally get them excited about what you do, and what you can do for their business or their clients.
Even though its so important to provide a strong, consistent message, make sure that you take an occasion to tell the networking professionals a story (preferably personal) that can…
… tell people a story that relates your area of expertise to something people can identify with.
Yes, people need to know what you do, and how you do it. Studies show that it takes people 4-6 weeks to strongly remember what you do, and the benefits of that service. However, people remember stories a lot more than they remember specific details.
Case in Point:
When Tyler Dockery talks about how Dockery Design can build websites, eCommerce solutions, google shopping carts, html email solutions and email blasts if your company needs an internet solutions, most people’s heads start spinning. Its just too specific for people to understand what we can do. They usually nod, and smile, and ask him about a problem with their email.
However, if Tyler Dockery talks about how painful a facelift is, how expensive they are and how long the recovery time will be, people are mystified. When he ends the story by telling people that a website facelift is much, much cheaper, quite fast to implement, and no break in your service, everyone seems to understand and see its value.
Reflect on your business, tell a story about how well you serviced a customer or how a vendor’s business was changed by using your services. Tell people more ABOUT your business by telling a story. Is there a story you like to tell people in order to help them learn more about you and your business? Let us know!
