Networking: 2 Minute Training #6: Sit On the Outside for Maximum Visibility and Hearing
When you attend a networking function, like a leads group meeting or chamber of commerce dinner, did you know that your placement can positively or negatively affect your business? By simply choosing carefully and paying attention closely to the location where you sit, you can reach a larger audience, and allow the captive audience to hear everything you have to say.
When you enter the room which will be holding the networking meeting, take a quick stock of the situation. What do the tables look like? How loud will you have to talk to be heard when you introduce your business? How far can people see?
Sit towards the back of the room, and around the outside edges, preferably at the corners. When introductions begin, they typically start at one side and move around to the other. By sitting on an outside corner, you stand a good chance of coming near the beginning (people still paying lots of attention) or near the end (people listening in anticipation of open networking).
By sitting in the back, and preferably at a corner, your voice should be able to project outward and get to everyone without you have to turn your body— and this is key. You only have one mouth, and it points forward, in a cone of hearable sound. If you have to rotate your body to speak to half of the room, the second half can’t hear you very well. If you have to rotate back, the first half of the room will not be able to hear you very well. There’s very little you can do about this, its physics at work.
Usually, people can see into the corners, where the focus is very small, with little or no problems. Also, people can speak from the corners easily and be heard. There is little or no reason to turn at all.

Sitting at the back of the room will allow you to travel from the front to the back of the room with ease. You can get into lines for food or drink and meet people on the way up, and meet people on the way back. If you were to sit at the front, you might be trying to talk with someone who just wants to put their things down, or someone who is seeking to have a quick meeting with a potential client.
Grab a seat where you can see everyone, and everyone can see you. Try to sit where you can address the crowd without having to turn back and forth. Get to meet everyone, and help their businesses grow!
